Zener Regulator, step by step
The resistor must satisfy the two opposite corners at once.
- Fix the zener voltageChoose V_Z at the output you need and note its test current I_ZT.
- Take the tight cornerLowest input voltage with the highest load current is the binding case.
- Size the series resistorR = (V_in min − V_Z)/(I_load max + I_Z min); keep I_Z min near 5 mA.
- Check the other cornerHighest input with no load at all: the zener then carries every milliamp.
- Check dissipationP_Z = V_Z I_Z max and P_R = (V_in − V_Z)²/R. Derate both parts.
A shunt regulator draws its full current whether the load needs it or not. Past about 100 mW, use a series regulator.

- Who is the Zener Regulator poster for?
- Zener Regulator belongs to the Electrical Engineering section rather than to a school year, because engineering is not something one grade owns. Anyone learning electronics can pin it up — a beginner, a student mid-course, or someone revising years later.
- When should you use the Zener Regulator poster?
- Good for a low-current reference; wasteful the moment the load draws real current. A wall chart earns its place by being glanceable from where the work is happening, so Zener Regulator belongs on the wall where that engineering work actually happens, within glancing distance, rather than filed away.
- What other posters go with Zener Regulator?
- BJT Operating Regions, BJT vs MOSFET and Common-Emitter Amp sit alongside Zener Regulator in the Electrical Engineering section. Printed together they make a wall rather than a single sheet, which is how a reference set actually gets used.BJT Operating RegionsBJT vs MOSFETCommon-Emitter Amp
- Is the Zener Regulator poster free to download and print?
- Yes. Zener Regulator downloads as a free PDF with no account, no email and no watermark, like everything else in the Electrical Engineering section. Print as many copies as you like for a home, a classroom, a library or a tutoring group; reselling the file is the only thing the licence rules out.Read the licence
- What size does the Zener Regulator poster print at?
- Zener Regulator is a vector PDF laid out for US Letter, and prints on A4 with Fit to page — the same file, no separate download. Because every mark on it is drawn rather than photographed, it stays sharp enlarged to A3, A2 or A1 at a copy shop. Colour carries emphasis only, so a greyscale print of Zener Regulator loses nothing.Printing guide
